Amtrak Station, Lawrence, Kansas, 2022

This is a proposed work, digitally rendered, to entice various city members to create a memorable artwork for arriving and departing passengers on an inoperative and defunct circular fountain bed. The work revolves around the concept of spoons as souvenirs: "A shiny, solid, slanting, spoon-shaped, semiabstract sculpture, sits on a sunken, sleek-surfaced sphere and casts soft, shifting shadows."

9th Street Corridor Public Art Project

The 9th Street Corridor Public Art Project was made possible by a $500,000 ARTPLACE Grant to foster various projects which celebrated the vital and thriving intersections of 9th Street to the Eastside Neighborhood and the Warehouse Arts District in Lawrence, Kansas.

Project Summary - I was fascinated by the overlooked and presumably unremarkable aspects of the East 9th Street neighborhood which included meandering abstract patterns in streets and sidewalks, the incongruously varied architectural details of private homes and businesses, local vegetation and trees, cables and wires on buildings and telephone poles that create rhythmic harmonies of parallel lines.

As a source of inspiration for this project were the words and ideas generated by the great American Poet and former East Lawrence resident and member of St. Lukes Church on 9th Street, Langston Hughes: “Rhythm is something we share in common, you and I, with all the plants and animals and people in the world, and with the stars and moon and sun, and all the whole vast wonderful universe beyond this wonderful earth which is our home.” This is the final sentence from his marvelous children’s book The Book of Rhythms published by Franklin Watts in 1954.

There is rhythm everywhere on East 9th Street and for this project, I explored, documented and generated, a series of eighty-one colored pencil and monoprint works on paper that revealed rhythm through repetition, patterns, directional elements, colors, design motifs, etc. The choice of a total of eighty-one revolved around the significance of the number 9. Hence, I multiplied the 9 numerical streets — 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12t, 13th, 14th and 15th streets with the 9 states streets — Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Oregon streets that form the parameter of the East Lawrence Neighborhood.

Like Hughes, I looked for visual rhythms everywhere in search for the ideas and associations they could elicit. My goal for this project was to celebrate East 9th Street and its adjoining streets and alleyways to encourage Lawrence residents past, present and future, to look at the East 9th Street neighborhood as well as their own surroundings in a fresh and playful way. In doing so they might discover for themselves, juxtapositions of scale, harmonies of shadows, rhythms, colorful patterns in surface textures, and joy in the most unexpected details of a neighborhood, by transcending the mundane and unearthing its hidden beauty.

New York City Arts for Transit Poster Series

Soho – MTA Poster Series
Soho – MTA Poster Series

Poster Statement: Artist Stephen Johnson's striking light and shadow study of an industrial fire escape evokes both Soho's manufacturing heritage and the urban beauty of this famous artistic community.

Poster: 45 x 29.5 inches, 1997
Original Artwork: Pastel and watercolor on paper, 17 x 25 inches (Collection of the MTA, New York, NY)

MTA Poster Series: The popular graphic poster program was established in 1991 to celebrate the diverse communities that make up the New York region. The commissioned work by painters, printmakers, and illustrators touches upon transit-related subjects and the places that can be discovered using the mass transit system. Posters are randomly displayed in unused advertising space on subway platforms throughout the 468 subway stations and on subway cars and buses. Printed posters are available for sale to the public through the New York Transit Museum Stores. Revenue from sales from the posters help to support the educational and exhibition programs at the non-profit museum. The Program offers illustrators and other artists the opportunity to reach a broader public, and provides the public exposure to incredible artists and visionaries who create a respite of engaging visual art.
